Science journalism research and storytelling environment

Where Research Meets Human Stories

Science journalism isn't about translating jargon. It's about finding the narrative thread in data, the human impact behind discoveries, and the questions that matter to real people.

Explore Our Approach

We Don't Teach Formula—We Build Instinct

Most science writing programs hand you templates. Write the lede this way, structure the nut graf that way. But here's what actually happens when you're staring at a 40-page research paper on CRISPR applications: templates don't help.

What helps is knowing how to interview a researcher without getting lost in their technical enthusiasm. How to spot which finding will resonate with a general audience versus specialists. How to write about uncertainty without undermining the science or boring your readers.

Our approach starts with three real assignments in your first month. Not hypotheticals—actual stories you'll pitch and develop. One participant last year covered breakthrough materials research at National Cheng Kung University. She'd never written about science before, but she knew how to ask "why does this matter?" in seven different ways until she got an answer regular people could connect with.

What You'll Actually Work On

Finding Stories in Academic Papers

We give you access to pre-publication research from Taiwan institutions. Your job: identify what's newsworthy before anyone else does. You'll practice cold-calling researchers, getting past PR gatekeepers, and extracting quotes that don't sound like grant applications.

Translating Without Dumbing Down

There's a difference between accessible writing and patronizing your audience. You'll learn to explain complex mechanisms using analogies that actually work—not the tired "think of DNA as a blueprint" stuff everyone's heard. Some concepts need new metaphors every time.

Building Editorial Relationships

Starting February 2026, we're connecting participants with editors at regional science publications. Not guaranteed placements—real opportunities to pitch, get feedback, revise, and occasionally get rejected. That's how you learn what editors need versus what you think sounds impressive.

Why Taiwan's Science Scene Matters More Now

Semiconductor research, marine biology breakthroughs, earthquake prediction technology—Taiwan produces world-class science that often gets covered only in specialized journals. There's a gap between what's happening in labs and what reaches general audiences.

If you can bridge that gap, you're not just writing—you're shaping how people understand the innovations coming from this region. And you're building a portfolio that demonstrates you can cover complex technical stories with both accuracy and readability.

Next Cohort Begins March 2026

We're looking for twelve people who want to develop practical science journalism skills through actual reporting projects. Background in science helps but isn't required—curiosity and willingness to ask potentially stupid questions matters more.
